Police officer, suspect killed in Georgia shooting  2 Months ago

ATLANTA – A Georgia police officer and a suspect were both shot and killed Thursday after a traffic stop, authorities say.

According to DeKalb County Police Chief James Conroy, the shooting occurred in the parking lot of a Piggly Wiggly grocery store not far from I-20 just east of Atlanta.

Conroy said the unidentified officer conducted a traffic stop in the Candler-McAfee neighborhood. The suspect reportedly ran off, and the officer followed.

Authorities said it was during that foot chase that the suspect reportedly pulled out a gun and shot the officer. The officer was rushed to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. Conroy said he had only been with the department for less than two years.

DeKalb County authorities brought in other officers and a K-9 to help track the suspect. They followed him to a business on Candler Road where they found him hiding. Conroy said the suspect shot the K-9. Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect several times.

He was also taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect's identity is not being released, though Conroy said he was a man in his 20s.

The K-9 was taken to an area vet and was in critical condition.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating.

The shooting caused a nearby portion of Interstate 20 to be temporarily shut down, leading to huge rush-hour traffic jams.
