Karnataka results show Congress' inability to counter BJP-RSS: CPM  3 Days ago

Source:   Times Of India

NEW DELHI: The only way to challenge the BJP-RSS is through alternative policy programmes, CPM mouthpiece People’s Democracy has said, while underlining the Congress’ inability to “counter the BJP-RSS forces politically, ideologically and organisationally.”

Even as the Congress and JD(S) camp burn the midnight oil to keep their flocks together to challenge the Yeddyyurappa led-BJP government in Karnataka, an editorial in the CPM mouthpiece released on Thursday said the defeat of Congress in Karnataka has served as a big blow to the grand old party.

People’s Democracy editor Prakash Karat, known to have opposed his party’s decision to have an “understanding” with the Congress in CPM”s political resolution also said in the editorial that Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s visits to temples and mutts have “proved to be a flawed and compromising approach to counter the Hindutva forces”.

On one hand, while Karat has appreciated the promptness with which the Congress acted to extend support to the JD(S) after Karnataka results were announced, the CPM leader has emphasised in his editorial that the united opposition must respond to the challenge posed by the BJP-RSS with policies rather than people.

The CPM mouthpiece also said the Congress was “not able to convince people that it had anything better to offer in terms of economic betterment and their livelihood issues given the fact that the Modi government is aggressively pursuing the very neo-liberal policies which the Congress stands for”.

The Karnataka elections, the editorial said must serve as a lesson for the Left and the democratic forces. It said, “The Left and democratic forces must draw the correct conclusions from this election. It is only through relentless struggles against the policies of the Modi government that unity of the people can be forged against the BJP.”

Insisting that a “credible alternative” to the BJP will only develop around people’s struggles, the CPM said, “There has to be an uncompromising struggle against the communal forces and their depredations by drawing in all the secular and democratic forces. It is when such movements and struggles develop around an alternative programme that a credible alternative will emerge.”
